BEIJING, Oct. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — This year’s Spring Festival Gala, an annual celebration produced and broadcast by China Media Group (CMG), was held on the eve of the Spring Festival on Friday evening. On this occasion, Chinese people all over the world gather with their families to welcome the Chinese New Year.

As China’s most-watched television show, the gala has been an annual tradition since it was first broadcast in 1983. The 2023 Gala was viewed 11 billion times across all CMG media channels, making it the most-watched television program in the world.

This year the gala will feature a mix of musical performances, comedy and traditional arts such as opera and martial arts, to spectacular performances such as magic and acrobatics. In addition, state-of-the-art technologies such as extended reality (XR) and immersive interaction technologies are used on stage to enhance the viewing experience.

Among the standout performances was the creative New Year customs program, which showcased the richness and diversity of Chinese food culture and hinted at a bountiful harvest in the Year of the Dragon. Another highlight was the Chinese drum dance, in which traditionally dressed dancers animated the stage with rhythmic drum beats. The choreography, a dynamic mix of precision and spontaneity, brought the ancient art form to life in a contemporary celebration.

Continuing this theme of innovation, the show “NEW YEAR BROCADE” creatively combined music with advanced virtual synthesis technology. It transformed representative symbols from ancient China into a fascinating exhibition and staged an “antique fashion show” in which the characters directly from seemed to emerge from the paintings. Intertwining traditional and modern elements, the show brings millennia-old cultural motifs to new life and amazes audiences with a showcase of oriental aesthetics.

These captivating performances were made possible by this year’s Gala utilizing a Virtual Production (VP) model that integrates an XR and VP system that brings together virtual and physical elements in ultra-high definition. Innovative recording techniques such as dynamic storyboard previews and the synchronization of virtual and real lighting effects create an amazingly realistic space in which virtual and real worlds merge seamlessly.

For the first time, an immersive stage interaction system is used in the studio hall, equipped with a free-view ultra-high-definition camera system. This system captures the actors’ movements from different angles, capturing the wonderful moments of the show. Using AI production and augmented reality for real-time rendering, a visual experience is created where actors and scenery merge together.

Another highlight of the gala is the skillful storytelling that captures the lives of ordinary people, from their challenges to their moments of joy, bringing the scenes of daily life to life. The “Spring Festival Gala is waiting for you” project, which invites ordinary people who have become Internet celebrities, has become a prominent feature of this year’s Spring Festival Gala.

The gala focuses on people from different backgrounds. From pasta chefs and retired technicians to police officers and athletes, people from a wide variety of professions told their stories in the opening short film “Our Spring Festival Gala,” raising hopes for a better future.

To celebrate the Year of the Dragon, CGTN launched the Loong Year Loong Dance Challenge on January 8, targeting a global social media audience. Because dance knows no national borders, this challenge invites a global audience to connect with the culture and festive spirit of the Spring Festival, bridging different communities through the universal language of movement.

CGTN broadcast the gala worldwide across its English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian-language channels and new media platforms in 68 languages, working with over 2,100 media companies in 200 countries and regions.

Due to this global appeal, the Spring Festival Gala will be broadcast live on over 3,000 public screens in 90 cities across six continents, allowing people around the world to experience the unique charm of China’s Spring Festival and culture while singing songs on this joyous occasion and enjoy laughter.
