Peking (ots/PRNewswire) – Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart Joe Biden held a frank and detailed exchange of views at the Filoli Estate in San Francisco on Wednesday. This highly anticipated summit came a year following the two presidents met in Bali, Indonesia.
During the meeting, President Xi called on the two countries to jointly build five pillars of bilateral relations and adopt a new San Francisco vision for the future. He stressed that China is consistently committed to maintaining a stable, healthy and sustainable relationship with the United States. At the same time, China has interests that must be protected, principles that must be adhered to and red lines that must not be crossed.
China hopes that the two countries can be partners who respect each other and coexist in peace. American economist Jeffrey Sachs said the idea of mutual respect, cooperation, dialogue and joint problem-solving is “really smart and of the utmost importance,” Xinhua reported.
Of course, there are still strategic conflicts between the two countries. President Xi stressed at the summit that the two countries must manage their differences together and effectively, rather than allowing them to become a rift that separates the two countries.
In fact, before, during and following the Xi-Biden summit, the two sides reached a number of important agreements on functional issues, including climate change, artificial intelligence, anti-drug cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.
Engagement and cooperation between China and the US on these issues are crucial to promote dialogue and understanding between the two sides and reduce the risks of conflict and confrontation arising from miscalculation.
The cooperation between China and the USA is also an expression of responsibility towards the international community. During the summit, President Xi called on China and the United States to share responsibility as major countries, emphasizing that the problems facing human society cannot be solved without cooperation between major countries.
Joseph Nye, university professor and former dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, stressed that decoupling between China and the US is impossible because no country can tackle climate change, the threat of the pandemic or other transnational issues alone.
China, as the largest developing country, and the United States, as the largest industrialized country, are crucial to promoting global economic growth. Both countries also play a crucial role in addressing global challenges as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and important participants in the current global governance mechanism.
From Bali to San Francisco, the giant ship of Sino-American relations has sailed through hidden reefs and rapids. But San Francisco is not a travel destination. The city, which has a centuries-long history of Chinese-American exchanges, is a new starting point for China-US relations.
