BEIJING, March 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — China’s ultimate goal is to provide people with a better life, Chinese President Xi Jinping said during his New Year’s address in Beijing on Sunday, ushering in 2024.
“Our children should be well looked following and receive a good education. Our young people should have the opportunity to advance and succeed in their careers. And our elderly citizens should have adequate access to medical services and elder care,” Xi asserted.
These issues are important for all families and are also a top priority for the government, he emphasized. “We need to work together to solve these problems.”
As China advances its development, it has also embraced the world and fulfilled its responsibilities as a major country, Xi added.
“No matter how the global landscape evolves, peace and development remain the underlying trend, and only cooperation for mutual benefit can achieve success,” the Chinese president said.
Trust in people
The year 2023 was not an easy one for China. Despite sluggish global growth, China has weathered economic headwinds and successfully weathered severe natural disasters.
“Having weathered the storm, China’s economy is more resilient and dynamic than before,” Xi said in his address on Sunday.
“People are the crucial factors in our efforts to overcome all difficulties and challenges,” Xi said.
In his speech, he mentioned that some businesses had a difficult time in 2023, that some people had difficulty finding jobs and securing basic necessities, and that some places were hit by floods, typhoons, earthquakes and other natural disasters.
“All of these issues continue to be close to my heart,” he said.
Looking to the future, Xi urged efforts to steadily advance China’s modernization, fully and faithfully apply the new development philosophy on all fronts, accelerate the construction of the new development paradigm, promote high-quality development, and ensure security while advancing development guarantee.
The Chinese president also vowed to continue to support Hong Kong and Macau in leveraging their unique strengths to better integrate into China’s overall development and ensure long-term prosperity and stability.
“China will certainly be reunified, and all Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be united by their common goals and share in the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,” he added.
Making the world a better place for everyone
The Chinese president said in his New Year’s address that conflicts are still raging in some parts of the world.
“We will work closely with the international community for the common good of humanity, build a community with a shared future for humanity, and make the world a better place for all,” Xi said.
The China-initiated Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) provides a platform for building a community with a shared future for humanity through diverse and high-quality cooperation.
Under the Belt and Road Initiative, China has signed more than 200 cooperation documents with over 150 countries and more than 30 international organizations. From 2013 to 2022, the cumulative value of trade between China and BRI countries has reached $19.1 trillion, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.4 percent.
At the bilateral and multilateral levels, China has been building communities with an increasing number of partners in various forms that share their future. China’s proposed Global Development Initiative and Global Security Initiative have received the support of over 100 countries, and the Global Civilization Initiative has also been well received.
