Peking (ots/PRNewswire) Adil Ahmed, 65, is one of the Pakistanis who have felt the impact of Pakistan’s thriving clean energy development through various energy projects undertaken in collaboration with China.

“I installed PV (photovoltaic) panels on my roof,” Ahmed said, adding that many of the panels in Pakistan are made in China.

China not only exports PV panels but also supports Pakistan in harnessing its abundant solar energy and water resources through green energy projects.

With an annual generation capacity of 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity, the Karot Hydroelectric Power Station is expected to save regarding 1.4 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.5 million tons every year, according to Pakistani officials at the Karot Hydroelectric Power Station.

The Karot hydropower project is just one of the examples of China’s efforts to build a green Belt and Road initiative.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of China’s proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Over the past decade, China has not only driven its own green transition but also made significant progress in developing a green BRI.

“Over the past 10 years, China has managed to achieve an average annual economic growth of 6 percent with an average annual growth of energy consumption of 3 percent,” said Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment, in his green round table speech Development of the BRI and at the general assembly of the BRI International Green Development Coalition in May.

China’s carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP have fallen by regarding 35 percent, equivalent to a reduction of regarding 3.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, Huang said, adding that China’s installed renewable energy capacity will reach 1.2 billion kilowatts in 2022 and thus for the first time in a historic race to catch up, I overtook that for coal-fired power plants.

In recent years, China has not only promoted its own green and sustainable development, but also exchanged advanced technologies with other countries and carried out several clean, low-carbon and high-quality green energy cooperation projects with other countries.

By leveraging its expertise in renewable energy, energy conservation, environmental protection and clean production, as well as adopting Chinese technologies, products and experiences, China is actively promoting BRI cooperation in the field of green development, said the white paper titled ” The Belt and Road Initiative: a pillar of the global community with a shared future.”

In Ethiopia, where abundant renewable energy sources, including wind and hydroelectric power, are estimated to be capable of generating more than 60,000 megawatts of electrical power, China helped build projects such as the Adama wind farms, located in a rocky hill range in the Ethiopian highlands, and the 254 MW Genale-Dawa III Hydroelectric Power Station.

In addition to using local renewable energy resources, China also attaches importance to environmental protection in energy development.

During the construction of the Mombasa-Nairobi standard gauge railway, which passes through nature reserves such as Nairobi National Park and Tsavo National Park, a number of measures were taken in the planning and construction of the railway.

There are 14 major wildlife passages and 79 bridges along the railway line. The bridge-like animal passages are over 6.5 meters high, so that even large animals such as elephants and giraffes can pass through them without any problems. In addition, isolation fences have been erected on both sides of the track to reduce contact between animals and trains.

Cooperation in the development of green and low-carbon energies is not limited to cooperation between individual countries.

China has reached environmental cooperation agreements with more than 30 countries and international organizations, launched the Belt and Road Partnership on Green Development with 31 countries, and launched the Belt and Road Initiative with more than 150 partners from over 40 countries International Green Development Coalition formed, the white paper says.

China is willing to work with other countries to pursue closer and more fruitful cooperation under the BRI and create an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world, it said.
