Peking (ots/PRNewswire) Chinese President Xi Jinping received a warm welcome from US officials at the airport following arriving in San Francisco on Tuesday for a summit with US President Joe Biden and the 30th APEC Economic Summit.

U.S. officials, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, were present at the airport to greet President Xi.

On the way from the airport to the hotel, many overseas Chinese were seen waving the national flags of China and the United States to greet Xi.

“We warmly welcome him. It’s really important that you know that APEC is a good opportunity for him and Biden to reset and further expand our relationship,” said Robert Weisenmiller, former chairman of the California Energy Commission.

The two presidents will hold in-depth discussions on issues of strategic, overarching and fundamental importance in shaping China-US relations and on important issues related to peace and development, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Monday.

The upcoming talks between Xi and Biden will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two presidents since they met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, last year. However, 2022 proved difficult for relations between the two nations as then-US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan region severely strained relations.

The optimism only became noticeable once more as the year progressed. Beijing and Washington have resumed communication and exchanged frequent exchanges in various areas in recent months, creating new conditions for the upcoming talks between the two leaders.

The world is watching to see whether the two leaders can improve the results in Bali and usher in new developments in bilateral relations in San Francisco.

“I was thrilled to see the leaders of China and the United States putting aside all differences on the geopolitical challenges that their teams regularly discuss to come together at APEC. Because they recognize the importance of this kind of engagement,” said Ertharin Cousin, former director of the UN World Food Program.

During his stay, Chinese President Xi Jinping will also attend a series of events aimed at finding common ground with leaders of Asia-Pacific economic entities. San Francisco is the host city for APEC Leaders’ Week 2023, November 11-17, under the theme “Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All.”
