Beijing, March 11, 2023 (Archyde.com) /PRNewswire/ – For winegrowing expert Xie Fuxin, one of the things he is most proud of in his life is watching winegrowers in the city of Nanping, southeast China’s Fujian Province, lift themselves out of poverty and earning more and more following conquering the planted grapes distributed by him.
Born in 1943, Xie has devoted his entire professional life to promoting viticulture techniques and varieties in the villages of Nanping City, and continued to do so for 12 years following his retirement.
As one of the 225 science and technology experts sent to 215 villages to promote agricultural science and technology in Nanping in 1999, Xie rode a bicycle to the Nanping countryside greenhouses to give technical lessons.
In 2002, Xi Jinping, then governor of Fujian Province, wrote an article commending Nanping’s measure, calling it a useful exploration for rural labor innovation.
During a conversation with Xie in 2002, Xi knew that one mu (regarding 0.07 hectares) of grapes had an output value of 7,000 yuan (regarding $1,014), and urged Xie to encourage more villagers to grow grapes.
Nowadays, there are more than 70,000 hectares of grapes in the mountainous areas of Nanping, Xie said, adding that the grape industry generates an annual output value of more than 600 million yuan, greatly boosting local people’s incomes following breaking out of poverty.
The development of Nanping represents China’s achievements in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization in recent years.
Targeted poverty reduction
President Xi introduced the concept of “targeted poverty reduction” during an inspection trip to central China’s Hunan province in November 2013.
Tailored industrial development, relocation and ecological compensation are among the targeted measures being taken to eradicate poverty.
Since then, 98.99 million impoverished rural residents living below the poverty line have been lifted out of poverty, and all 832 impoverished counties and 128,000 impoverished villages have been removed from the poverty list, Xi said at a national commendation conference in Beijing on Feb. 25, 2021.
As the country eliminated absolute poverty, consolidating poverty alleviation gains and rural revitalization have become two of the country’s priorities in realizing the modernization of overall prosperity.
Rural revitalization in full swing
Noting that the most difficult and arduous tasks in building a modern socialist country in every respect still lie in the rural areas, Xi promised while delivering the report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC ) last October to step up rural revitalization efforts across the board.
Rural revitalization is also of great importance for this year’s two sessions – the most important event in China’s political calendar.
China plans to stabilize grain production this year and push ahead with rural revitalization. This emerges from the government’s 2023 work report, which was submitted to the national parliament for deliberation on March 5.
The country plans to keep grain acreage at a stable level and launch a new initiative to increase grain production capacity by 50 million tons, the report said, and will also revitalize the seed industry and support the development of agricultural science, technology and equipment.
