BEIJING , Aug. 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — When the China-Vietnam freight train was launched in 2017, there were less than five trains departing from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China every month. However, last month alone, trains transported a record 1,922 TEU containers, exceeding the total transportation volume in the first quarter of 2024.

“I have been engaged in cross-border railway transportation for five years. “I feel that the economic and trade exchanges between China and Vietnam have been much more active this year.” said Yang Bo, logistics director of a freight company in Guangxi.

Xi Jinping said that China is willing to work with Vietnam to accelerate the “hard connectivity” of railways, highways, and port infrastructure, strengthen the “soft connectivity” of smart customs, and jointly build safe and stable industrial and supply chains.

Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered an important speech during his talks with Su Lin, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the State, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Xi Jinping emphasized that during the critical period of national development and revitalization, China and Vietnam should, under the guidance of the concept of building a community with a shared future, build stronger political mutual trust, more solid security cooperation, deeper practical cooperation, stronger public support, and closer multilateral coordination and cooperation. Difference management and resolution are more effective.

Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said that the Vietnamese party and government will deepen the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic partnership around six key goals and promote the construction of a community with a shared future of strategic significance to the two countries.

China and Vietnam have announced the establishment of a community in December 2023.

“Comrades, brothers”

Carrie Lam is on a three-day state visit to China. This is her first overseas trip since taking office as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee earlier this month.

This reflects the great importance Carrie Lam attaches to the relationship between the two parties and the two countries, and also reflects the high level and strategic nature of China-Vietnam relations.

He praised the relationship between the two parties that has been passed down from generation to generation and is as deep as “comrades and brothers.”

China is willing to maintain close strategic communication and high-level exchanges with Vietnam, firmly support each other, and actively seek to strengthen the connection between the “Belt and Road” initiative and the “Two Corridors and One Circle” economic strategy,” Xi said.

According to data from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce in November 2023, China has been Vietnam’s largest trading partner for many years in a row, and Vietnam is China’s largest trading partner in ASEAN and China’s fourth largest trading partner in the world.

The Chinese Embassy in Vietnam cited local media sources as saying that trade between Vietnam and China developed strongly in the first half of this year, reaching US$95 billion. If this trend continues in the second half of the year, bilateral trade volume will reach US$200 billion throughout the year.

Diplomacy first

Xi Lin said in a phone call on Monday that China places Vietnam at a priority position in its peripheral diplomacy, supports Vietnam in adhering to the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, taking a socialist path suitable for its national conditions, and supports Vietnam in further advancing its reform, opening up, and socialist modernization.

Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said that as the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and the president of the country, the choice of China as the first overseas visit destination reflects that the Vietnamese party and government have always attached great importance to developing relations with China and regard China as the strategic choice of their foreign policy.

Gao Lei and Xia Lu said that in the next few decades, China-Vietnam relations will become an example of a new pattern of cooperation between two socialist countries facing modernization challenges and tasks based on similar historical trajectories and a common international environment.

After the talks, Xi Jinping and Carrie Lam jointly witnessed the signing of a series of bilateral cooperation documents in the fields of party schools, interconnection, industry, finance, customs and quarantine, people’s livelihood, health, communications media, and local exchanges.

During the Vietnamese leader’s visit that ends on Tuesday, the two sides will also issue a joint statement on promoting the two countries’ comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and building a strategic China-Vietnam community with a shared future.

Nguyen Van Tho, vice chairman of the Vietnam-China Friendship Association and former Vietnamese ambassador to China, said that this visit will inject new impetus into Vietnam-China cooperation in politics, security, economy, society, humanities and other fields.

At the same time, the two countries are strengthening exchanges and cooperation on international and regional issues, which will play a positive role in maintaining regional peace and stability.
