CFL: Mario Cecchini’s contract would not be renewed by the Alouettes

The Montreal Alouettes do not intend to renew the contract of their president Mario Cecchini, according to information obtained by Herb Zurkowsky from the English-language media The Montreal Gazette.

Also, running backs coach and assistant coach André Bolduc will leave the Alouettes to join the Saskatchewan Roughriders as running backs coach and ground game coordinator. The information was reported by Zurkowsky and was confirmed to the reporter from the RDS.ca Éric Leblanc on Monday evening.

He had been involved in the process of hiring a new head coach, but it was ultimately Maas who got the job.

Cecchini’s current contract will end at the end of December, he who had been in place since January 2020.

Cecchini helped the Alouettes increase the attendance average at Percival-Molson Stadium from 13,063 in 2021 to 17,683 in 2022.

The news comes a few hours before the press conference scheduled for Tuesday, to introduce the team’s new head coach Jason Maas.

The last few seasons have been eventful in the Montreal clan. After the cancellation of the 2020 season and the complications of the shortened 2021 season, Cecchini had seen team co-owner Gary Stern step down from the team’s day-to-day operations in 2022. Stern owns 25% of the team.

Last season, the Alouettes finished second in the Eastern Division with a record of nine wins and nine losses. The team then reached the Eastern Finals, where they lost to the eventual Gray Cup champions Argonauts.
