CF Montreal/Impact Find Success on the Road: Scoring More Regularly and Defensive Improvements

The BMO field has not always been kind to CF Montreal/Impact. That’s two straight wins in Toronto and a sweep in the Montreal-Toronto series. On Sunday evening, Hernan Losada’s men showed a new face on the road. The Achilles heel before this move was obvious. How to replicate the success at Stade Saputo on opposing ground? Especially how to score more regularly?

New things appeared in the starting XI in this first match of the final sprint towards the playoffs.

Vilsaint the surprise

The offensive machine has woken up far from home. Before this meeting, CF Montreal had scored five goals in 12 games. Here are three goals on Toronto soil. Mathieu Choinière scored two goals and regained his momentum and his form as the 2023 season’s MVP.

But it was Jules Anthony Vilsaint who was the surprise. At the start of the season, he found himself fifth in the hierarchy of the highest attacking minutes at the end of the game. The three and a half weeks were enough for him to convince the coach, supplant the established hierarchy and have his first start. He was involved in the first two goals for CF Montreal.

It is especially the first that I remember. This initiative, this desire to rush towards the goal ball at the foot. The strength of other forwards is speed, without the ball deep. Vilsaint, he also having a good burst of speed, has this ability in the one once morest one. He stood up to his opponent and fought his way in to attempt a strike which ended up hitting the post before Choinière redirected the ball into the back of the net.

This type of action to unbalance the opponent was lacking in offensive players. Here is an attacker in the profile of a certain Romell Quioto capable of creating his own chances.

Vilsaint seized his opportunity, but an injury forced him out in the 38th minute. Hoping it’s not serious and that the young Quebecer is consistent in his performance. The attack was effective once morest Toronto FC by registering 60% of the total production on the season. Small flat: the end of the match turned out to have more suspense at 3-2. There should have been no glimmer of hope for Toronto FC late in the game. Opoku had the opportunity to put this game away and make it 4-1.

On the bright side, better to have missed chances than none.

Caporal Waterman

The loss of Rudy Camacho brought a question mark. Who would become the new defense boss?

The indications put Campbell in the center of the defense. Several times this season, Losada has relied on the American acquired from Atlanta in the middle of a three-center defense.

Finally, it was Waterman, who was the lucky one to step into Camacho’s vacant shoes. Waterman was reassuring. We know his quality of passing, but he was more communicative by voice, gesturing to go up the line or indicate the danger to his defense partners. He was more alert more often on his supports.

Private Waterman became a corporal. Now to see if he can become a defense lieutenant like a Camacho. We will not say general. Term reserved for Laurent Ciman.

Little smile…
