The Cessna Citation Ascend was designed and manufactured by Textron Aviation Inc., a company Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT).

The Ascend program includes two test articles, Prototype (Proto) and P1, which have accumulated approximately 600 flight hours in more than 200 flights.

“Citation business jets are renowned for their superior performance and productivity,” said Lannie O’Bannion, senior vice president, Global Sales and Flight Operations. “Including the Garmin G5000 in the Citation Ascend demonstrates our continued commitment to designing and delivering the best aviation experience for our customers. We can’t wait to see this aircraft being delivered to customers.”

The Ascend is designed with a new cockpit, improved performance and a luxurious cabin for the midsize business jet market. The aircraft’s state-of-the-art avionics, automatic throttles, high payload capacity and impressive range offer customers a reduced pilot workload and the ability to do more and go further.

When equipped with the latest Garmin G5000 avionics suite, Ascend will feature a number of new features and advanced technologies from Garmin, including the Synthetic Vision Guidance System (SVGS), displayed on the main flight displays, which couples with Synthetic Vision (SVT) to support minimum approach up to 150 feet (approx. 46 m). SVGS provides a continuous, geospatially accurate representation of outdoor scene topography, which may include obstacles, augmented by the lane view.

Expanded SVT capabilities for improved taxiway routing

SVT enhancements include 3D exocentric view of the SafeTaxi® airport environment to aid situational awareness during taxiing. SVT also displays 3D building plans, including hangars, terminals and towers, taxiways, aprons, signs and other markings to reduce runway incursions, providing guidance while taxiing at airports contained in the SafeTaxi database. The enhancements also support the pilot’s situational awareness by increasing topographic clarity, improving water and terrain boundaries, improving the display of obstacles and power lines, and improving representations of runway and airport signage. SVT introduces multiple viewpoints for the first time and integrates with the new Taxiway Routing feature, which allows flight crews to use the touchscreen controller to enter taxiway routes, which then provides guidance on 2D navigation maps or renderings. 3D of SVT, especially at large, unfamiliar and complex airports during low visibility conditions.

Increased awareness and traffic separation

The Ascend can utilize the standard Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) capability for Cockpit Traffic Information (CDTI) and Assisted Visual Separation (CAVS) display. CAVS increases pilots’ awareness of traffic and helps them maintain separation from preceding ADS-B-equipped aircraft during visual landing approaches. Runway Occupancy Awareness (ROA) uses Surface Indications and Alert (SURF-IA) and ADS-B data to generate alert during an attempted takeoff or landing on an occupied runway .

Advanced connectivity and data exchange

For eligible regions, the GDL 60 Datalink offers high-bandwidth connectivity and data exchange options, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE networks. The GDL 60 features the ability to complete automatic wireless database downloads via network connections while the aircraft is powered off. Additionally, enhancements to the optional GDL 69A allow the Garmin G5000 suite to access more SiriusXM Weather products.

Comprehensive display and situational awareness

The G5000 integrated avionics suite features three landscape-oriented flight displays with split-screen capability to allow pilots to simultaneously view maps, charts, checklists, Ground Proximity Warning and Perception System (TAWS), Warning System Traffic and Collision Avoidance (TCAS), flight plan information, weather and more, increasing flight crew situational awareness. It also includes Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) and fully automatic advanced weather radar, features ADS-B Out compliance, and enables future growth and expansion through software updates.

A Textron Aviation announced in May that the best-selling Cessna Citation Latitude and flagship Citation Longitude will also feature these Garmin G5000 avionics suite enhancements.
