Every year, at the end of its concert season, a chamber orchestra visits Cēsis Kremerata Balticagiving listeners unheard programs and new discoveries.
This time, the outstanding violinist Gidon Krämer and the orchestra have put the cycle of the well-known Japanese film composer Shigeru Umebayashi in the center of the program. Japanese seasons. The piece for violin, string orchestra and percussion was written especially for Krämer and Kremerata Baltica. It premiered at the Kronberg Academy Festival in Germany in September 2015 and later also in the composer’s homeland of Japan, Tokyo in October 2015.
Shigeru Umebayashi was born in 1951 and came to the world’s attention for his film scores, many of which have received prestigious awards. He has composed soundtracks for over thirty Japanese films, while his international success is Zhang Yimou’s film The House ok flying daggers, take forda A Single Man (A Single Man) un Vonga Karvaja In the Mood for Love (In the Mood for Love).
Next to the mood of Japan – the First String Quartet of the Hungarian and Austrian composer Gērģs Ligeti Nocturnal Metamorphoses. Ligeti is one of the most important composers of modern classical music of the second half of the twentieth century, whose 100th anniversary is being celebrated this year by the entire music world.
In the second part of the concert, a cycle of compositions initiated by Gidon Kremer, dedicated to Kremerata Baltica for the 25th anniversary Another Winter Road – inspired by Franz Schubert. The master has suggested the creation of many compositions, and often they are tributes to a favorite composer.
Already 20 years ago, Leonid Desyatnikov, addressed by Gidon Kremer, dedicated to him and Kremerati Baltica works for violin and string orchestra Like the (old) hurdy-gurdy man…which referred to Schubert’s song cycle Winter road the last song. The composer noted that this song, written at the beginning of the 19th century, is a masterpiece of minimalism, and his own opus is neither a paraphrase nor a fantasy, but a commentary on this melancholic song – a work in which his own style combines with allusions to Austrian romantic music.
In the cycle Another Winter Road fantasy comments on Schubert’s theme will be provided by three more composers invited by Gidon Kremer – Raminta Šerkšnīte, Aleksander Raskatov and Georgy Osokin.
