In addition to a host of computers and a smartphone, the Taiwanese manufacturer Asus took advantage of CES 2024 to present augmented reality glasses, the Airvision M1. They are equipped with a Micro-Oled screen with 1080p resolution with a vertical field of vision of 57°. They also integrate speakers into their branches and microphones to capture sound.
According to images provided by Asus, the Airvision M1s use a “Birdbath” type lens system, which has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive compared to waveguides and allowing a relatively wide field of vision. . On the other hand, the brightness of the image is typically quite low, and the design means that the device is visibly further from the face than traditional glasses. This is also the type of optics used by the Nreal Light.
Asus designed the Airvision M1 for multi-screen viewing. They work by connecting to a PC or phone via a USB-C cable. The user can choose different screen sizes (16:9, 21:9 or 32:9) and can position them wherever they want. The glasses only have 3DOF tracking, meaning they are designed to be used while remaining still, but take head movements into account. This is how you can move from one screen to another.
The user interface is done using a touchpad located on the left temple of the glasses. Asus has not communicated on the price or availability date of the Airvision M1s, but they should be relatively affordable given their technical characteristics. Their main interest seems to be use as a compact display device in mobility situations, for example for working on the train or the plane.
