Cervical cancer prevention and screening in Occitanie

Today begins the 16th European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (January 24-30, 2022). She calls on all women aged 25 to 65 who have not had a smear for at least 3 years to get tested.

Dr Joseph Pujol took up his duties as Director General of the Regional Center for the Coordination of Cancer Screening in Occitanie (Crcdc-OC) on November 17, 2021. University radiologist and former head of service at the Chu de Montpellier, Dr Pujol is engaged in breast cancer screening for years: he created the Mammobile in 1990 in the Hérault with Professor Jean-Louis Lamarque.
The Crcdc-OC, a major player in public health prevention, implements and coordinates organized screening for breast, colon and cervix cancers in the 13 departments of the Occitanie territory.

The objective is to improve the health of the population, by detecting cancerous lesions as early as possible. This allows early management of the disease with better chances of recovery, generally lighter treatments and reduced risk of sequelae.

European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week:
The 16th European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week takes place this year from January 24 to 30, 2022. It is an opportunity to remind all women aged 25 to 65 who have not had a Pap smear for at under 3 the importance of getting tested. Each year in France, there are 3,000 new cases of cancer of the cervix and 1,100 deaths related to this cancer; yet this disease is now preventable thanks to vaccination and screening

Cervical cancer is linked to a persistent high-risk HPV virus infection, yet there are vaccines that can protect once morest the HPV viruses most frequently involved in cancer. It is recommended to vaccinate young girls but also young boys preferably from 11 to 14 years old, a catch-up being possible until 19 years old.
In addition to vaccination, it is important to get tested regularly.

Pap smear screening is recommended for all women from the age of 25 to the age of 65. Every 3 years before age 30 following 2 negative tests 1 year apart and every 5 years following age 30. Screening can be done by a GP, gynecologist, midwife or in some prescription labs.

In 2018, the Ministry of Health launched a national organized screening program for cervical cancer, which is managed in each region by the Crcdcs: Regional Cancer Screening Coordination Centers. The purpose of these centers is to invite eligible women and follow them up to invite them back at the indicated time or, in the event of an abnormal screening result, to ensure that the necessary additional examinations are carried out.

In 2021, more than 650,000 women were invited by the Crcdc Occitanie to carry out this screening. Within the framework of organized screening, the analysis of the “smear” is covered 100% by the Health Insurance without advance payment.
