Of course, demand for the Daytona has led to pre-owned models being sold at well above retail prices. Less popular models, such as the Date, Datejust, and Air King, tend to sell at or below retail price on the second-hand market, resulting in a premium of as much as 40% when verified by the Certified Used Program. Rolex’s classic model Submariner has a relatively low surcharge of 17%, and there are 192 units available for direct purchase. In the case of Rolex, the supply of new watches is so limited that certain models have to be put on a waiting list for years, so the certified pre-owned program is virtually the only way to buy a Rolex through an authorized dealer. As Rolex fully supports the certified used program for second-hand traders, trading through the verified used program is currently the safest second-hand purchase option for buyers.
