Patients with acute chest pain must be treated as soon as possible. In the Medical Clinic I (Cardiology) of the Cardiothoracic Center of the Klinikum Fulda there is a so-called Chest Pain Unit: This special diagnostic and therapy unit for the rapid treatment of patients with chest pain has now been successfully certified by the German Society for Cardiology.
“We have thus set the course so that we can continue to provide our patients with the best possible care in the future,” says Prof. Dr. Volker Schächinger, Director of the Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine. The Chest Pain Unit (CPU) of the Fulda Clinic is a specialized emergency room that is open all the time, which is connected to the IMC station (monitoring station) and in which the cause of chest pain is quickly clarified using standardized processes. It is particularly important to diagnose or rule out a heart attack as quickly as possible so that appropriate therapies can then be initiated. Schächinger continues: “In the case of sudden chest pain, there is always the suspicion of a heart attack and therefore quick action is necessary, since time determines the extent and consequences of the heart damage.
At the first sign, such as severe, long-lasting chest pain, burning and tightness in the chest, vomiting and/or shortness of breath, the emergency services should be alerted immediately. If the ECG (electrocardiogram) shows clear signs of a heart attack, the patient is taken straight to the clinic, where a heart catheter examination can be carried out.
However, if the cause of the symptoms is unclear, the patients are in good hands in the CPU. An excellently trained team consisting of doctors and nurses is available here, who carry out further examinations in order to get to the bottom of the complaints. If a serious clinical picture is completely ruled out, the patient can usually be discharged home quickly. However, if the suspicion of a heart attack is confirmed, the necessary heart catheter examination will be arranged immediately. If critical narrowing of the coronary arteries is detected, this can be eliminated with a stent if necessary. Chest pain can also have other causes. Appropriate recommendations for further diagnostics and treatments are then made in the CPU.
“With the Chest Pain Unit, we can offer our patients rapid, high-quality diagnostics and therapy, and offer our referring doctors and other hospitals a competent contact person around the clock who will advise them in emergencies and take care of their patients.” (pm) +++
