France: CEO of Total promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor: the ulcerated left

The Élysée once again decorated Patrick Pouyanné this Friday. A place of honor that does not pass with several political leaders.

Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies, was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2015. He was promoted to the rank of officer on the occasion of the July 14 celebration.

In France, several left-wing politicians criticized Friday the promotion to the rank of officer of the Legion of Honor of the CEO of TotalEnergies, whose leader of the Socialists pointed to the “ecocide projects”. Patrick Pouyanné, had already been made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 2015.

“Honoring a boss who continues his ecocide projects, what is the message?” questioned the boss of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, on Twitter. “Plunder natural resources, dig an ecocide project in Uganda and South Africa, accumulate billions on the destruction of the planet… And receive the Legion of Honor,” quipped EELV MEP (ecologist) Karima Delli.

“A huge middle finger to climate change”

Green MP Sandrine Rousseau denounced the “absolutely incredible” level “of cynicism, climate denial, feeling of omnipotence and impunity of the President of the Republic”. His colleague Alma Dufour, of the radical left party LFI, saw in it “a huge middle finger to climate change”, while MEP Manon Aubry, also LFI, considered that it was “the Legion of honor for the destruction of the planet and tax evasion”.

Mega oil project in Uganda faces criticism

A regular target of climate activists, TotalEnergies was also questioned earlier this week by the NGO Human Rights Watch, which considered that the oil megaproject led by the French giant in Uganda was a “disaster” for the population, had “devastated the livelihoods of thousands of people” and “will contribute(it) to the global climate crisis”. TotalEnergies had on the contrary affirmed “putting environmental and biodiversity issues as well as the rights of the communities concerned at the center of the project”.
