Melbourne: Australian star David Warner ended his two-year century drought. The player has also entered the record books with his century on the second day of the second Test once morest South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The player scored the 25th century of his career in the 100th Test.
Warner last scored a Test century in January 2020. The player crossed the century in just 144 balls. He passed 8,000 runs in Tests. Warner became only the eighth player to reach this milestone in Tests. He also became the second Australian to score a century in his 100th Test. Prior to this, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting had achieved such an achievement. Warner is the second player to score a century in 100 matches in both ODIs and Tests. Former West Indies player Gordon Greenidge is the first player to achieve such a feat.
Warner, who started with 32 on the first day, saw the Proteas bowlers being beaten head and neck today. The player who found the fastest century also crossed 150. Warner’s campaign is accompanied by Steven Smith. Australia are currently in a strong position of 262 for two. Warner remains unbeaten on 153 runs and Smith on 73 runs.
South Africa were bowled out for 189 runs on the first day. Kyle Vereen (52) and Marco Jansen (59) who scored half-centuries saved the visitors from embarrassment. Cameron Green was the South African winger with five wickets.
