Central- Meta surrenders and submits to EU law

2024-01-22 15:06:03

Meta announced that it will adhere to a requirement in the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) that it cannot force users to remain within its system. This decision will greatly affect the Meta user experience in the European Union, as the company will allow users to use the Messenger application and the Facebook Marketplace without the need for an account on the Facebook application.

Meta’s surrender following trying to fight the law for a while means that users of Messenger and Facebook Store in the European Union can now benefit from all services through independent accounts. The only difference in the Facebook Store is that conversations will take place via email.

In addition, the European Commission’s Meta regulations include enabling users to keep their Facebook and Instagram accounts separate, for example, instead of linking information between the two platforms.

The European Commission initially classified six companies as “gatekeepers”, which are companies with annual turnover in Europe of at least 7.5 billion euros in the three financial years before 2023, or those with a market capitalization of 75 billion euros. In at least three member states of the European Union. According to the law, all gatekeepers must comply with all aspects of the Digital Markets Act in 2024.

The American “Apple” and the Chinese “ByteDance” are also among other companies that opposed the DMA regulations before their implementation in March 2024.
