Central – Derb Akkar in a report on the Batarmaz fire: 40 hectares damaged

The Akkar Trail Association issued a preliminary report on a forest fire in Tarmaz – al-Dinniyeh, in which it said: “On June 7 in the followingnoon, His Excellency the Minister of Environment, Dr. Nasser Yassin, informed us of a fire that broke out in the forest of the town of Tarmaz – al-Dinniyeh, and immediately we started in coordination with friends from the mentioned town and the head of the Center The embarrassment in the area, Muhammad Shouk, and the head of the Civil Defense Center in Al-Safira Saad Abu Radwan, who informed us of the situation of the fire, and because of the fog, it was not possible for the helicopters to enter, and the suppression operations by the Civil Defense and the people were limited to what can be accessed and watched, and with the nightfall and the receding of the fog, the disaster unfolded with a metaphor One of the densest forests of pine protea in Lebanon is threatened by fire.

As a result, and in view of the seriousness of the situation, the Akkar Trail team mobilized and moved in the early hours of the morning to the area, participating alongside the Civil Defense, the Lebanese Army’s helicopters, the Forest Center at the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as volunteers from the Emergency and Relief Agency, the Lebanese Environmental Movement, the first responder team in the Union of Jurd al-Qayta’ Municipalities and dozens of volunteers From the people who came to support. The suppression and control process began with the support of the Lebanese army’s helicopters, with the arrival of His Excellency the Minister of Environment in the morning and his advisor, Dr. George Mitri, and the Akkar Trail team received the north-western sector, and following the reconnaissance process by means of a drone, a plan for combat was developed following using the information provided by the National Council for Scientific Research through Dr. Shadi Abdullah, and the Disaster Management Room in the Government House, regarding the weather, especially in the direction of wind, humidity, and the severity of the fire danger.

Then the team moved upwards for more than 700 m and made its way with hand tools inside the dense forest. After strenuous efforts, the entire sector was controlled, cooled in a good shape, and isolation lines were set up to avoid any possible renewal.

The other participating teams confirmed the control of their sectors as well, so that the fire was completely controlled this followingnoon, with the concerted efforts of all.

The report also pointed out that “the affected area was estimated at regarding 40 hectares of pine forests rich in various types of medicinal and aromatic plants and orchids, as well as oak and terebinth trees.” He pointed out that “the level of damage is from light to medium due to the absence of coronary fires, and the fire was limited to ground and surface fires.”

The report thanked “everyone who contributed to putting out this fire, and we are proud that our team did its duty to preserve nature in this region that is dear to us and its people, who are our people and our neighbors.”
