As announced by the Cuban Central Bank (BCC), a new edition of the 100 peso notes with reduced security features was issued this year. “Unlike the previous banknote, the 2023 issue has neither haptic embossing nor a Braille code for the blind,” said a communiqué from the Cuban Central Bank’s Directorate for Issues and Securities, which was quoted by the party newspaper Granma. All certificates already in circulation remain valid
The tactile security features were first introduced in 2014. In 2015, in preparation for the currency reform, which had been postponed several times, the introduction of high denominations of 200, 500 and 1000 pesos followed for the first time, with the security features being retained. Most recently, a new series of peso notes was issued in 2021. There, the watermark of the revolutionary Célia Sánchez was replaced by that of the person depicted on the front.
The central bank did not provide a reason for the abolition of the security features. However, it can be assumed that the measure is intended to reduce costs: With the implementation of the currency reform on January 1, 2021, the amount of cash in circulation in Cuba more than doubled from 56 to 124 billion pesos, while the country was also in a recession has slipped.
So far, counterfeiting has not played a major role in Cuba. However, it is to be feared that this might change in the future. Travelers should therefore check the larger bills on occasion. Except for the omission of the security features mentioned, the year 2023 and the other signature of the new central bank president Joaquín Alonso Vázquez, there are no changes to previous issues. The following is the central bank pattern of the current 100 peso bill:
