Chinese President Xi Jinping has asked his country and the countries of Central Asia to show their full potential for cooperation in trade, economy and infrastructure.
The Chinese president is hosting the region’s key strategic-level summit in Xi’an, attended by heads of state from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
China hailed the summit as a ‘major milestone’, saying that trade in Central Asia had reached $70 billion in 2022 and a further 22 percent year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2023.
The region is a key part of China’s multi-trillion-dollar global infrastructure project, the Belt and Road.
Addressing key leaders of the region, Xi Jinping said that all countries should demonstrate the full potential of traditional cooperation in economy, trade, industrial capacity, energy and transport.
He also emphasized the need to open new doors of development in various sectors including finance, agriculture, poverty reduction, carbon reduction, health and digital development.
He said that China and Central Asian countries should further expand mutual interest and should fully cooperate with each other in matters of important interests.
The Chinese President called separatism, terrorism and extremism the three major enemies of the region and also emphasized the need to increase security cooperation among all countries.
He said that the six countries should oppose foreign interference in their internal affairs and attempts to create a color revolution.
The next summit of these countries will be held in Kazakhstan in 2025.
