Live, work, undertake with only eight hours of electricity per day. This is the daily challenge faced by many Central African economic operators. On April 3, the authorities commissioned the Sakaï solar power plant located 10 km from Bangui. The Sakai solar field currently provides 15 kilowatts of electricity and aims to reduce the electricity supply deficit. From our correspondent in Bangui, Using a welding gun, Mariam Ouabilo is finishing the fabrication of a gate. It is 11 a.m. and this is the fifth order that his workshop has won during the day. She tells us regarding her difficulties when there was only eight hours of power a day in the area. An energy deficit, causing load shedding in the districts of the capital Bangui and slowing down economic growth. “When there is no power, the work does not progress. It doesn’t move. For our work, we really need electricity”. Since the commissioning of the Sakaï solar power plant, the load shedding regime has changed in the Fatima district. “On our side, here, it’s fine. We have power almost every day. For the moment it’s fine, the current is stable, ”says Mariam Ouabilo. Until then, the inhabitants of Bangui and its surroundings benefited from approximately nine hours of electricity per day. The authorities are betting on this solar power plant to extend this time slot. “Energy is the basis of everything. Without energy, nothing can be done. We have just inaugurated a solar power plant which will increase all electricity in Bangui by an additional 15 megawatts, announces Arthur Bertrand Piri, Minister of Energy. And it will be used for households, it will be used for economic development, it will also be used for industrialists. So it is a factor of development for our country”. This project comes on top of the Boali 2 hydroelectric power station and the Bangui thermal power station. “We were able to supply several of the neighborhoods with the help of the Sakaï solar power plant, including Boeing, the people of Bimbo, the plateau and other parts of Kilometer 5, explains Céline Nganaré, one of the managers of this plant. Those of the sectors that I have just mentioned have energy 24 hours a day today. Everything is normal, the plant works 24 hours a day. If the person wishes to have electricity, he only has to go to the commercial department to make the arrangements and we will go and connect him. In some neighborhoods, the power supply has gone from eight to sixteen hours a day. This is a plus for economic operators in these sectors. On the other hand, in the other districts, the coverage has not changed, thus creating a feeling of dissatisfaction among the inhabitants. With this solar power plant, the electricity distribution capacity increases from 60 to 72 megawatts. Still far from satisfying all the needs estimated at 250 megawatts for the whole territory. ► To read also: Central African Republic: commissioning of the Sakaï solar power plant, near Bangui
