Censorship Controversy: President López Obrador Interview Removed by INE

2024-03-15 13:08:46

Following yesterday’s order from the INE, the Presidency of the Republic removed from its official YouTube channels the interview that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador held with journalist Inna Afigenova, from Canal Red, for taking a position on electoral issues and on the presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum.

Currently, the YouTube link where this video was hosted on the platform is no longer available and only the legend “Video not available” appears. “This video is private.”

On López Obrador’s official channels, both on YouTube and Facebook, only a “short” of the interview of just over a minute appears.

Until yesterday, this interview on President López Obrador’s official channel had 3.1 million views.

This Thursday, upon being informed of this decision by the INE, President López Obrador accused “censorship” of the electoral body and announced that he will challenge this decision before the Electoral Court (TEPJF).

“The INE has just decided that they are going to download an interview that a Spanish journalist of Russian origin, Inna, gave us. They haven’t notified us yet. I already look like a huizachero lawyer from the Judiciary. It is not like this? ‘As long as they don’t notify you…’

“It’s a good interview that this journalist Inna did with me. It has been seen a lot in Mexico and it has been seen a lot in Spain. And because we talked about what she asked me and now it turns out that they want me to take it down. Censorship!”

“This is what Claudia Sheinbaum talks about,” it was pointed out.

“Well, she asks me (…) We don’t talk about that. The interview is quite well seen because I even mentioned it, she left me like a squeezed lemon, because she asked me everything, yes. But right now they are informing me that they have already censored it, all we can do is go to Court, right? Yes, she is going to appeal. Yes, and she is going to give us time, and delay tactics, that is, we are already the same. “What an outrage!” she responded.

The Commission ordered the elimination or modification of this interview on the president’s Facebook and YouTube channels, as well as on the official page within a maximum period of six hours from the modification, upon preliminary warning of expressions that could affect the contest.

However, he declared it inadmissible to download the content from the Canal Red platforms, as it is an expression of journalistic activity, nor from the president’s X account because the reported expressions were not found.

The PAN and PRD parties denounced this interview by accusing that President López Obrador made demonstrations that could violate the principles of neutrality, equity and impartiality in the 2024 electoral process, as well as improper use of public resources.
