Government and civil society representatives will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Geneva on Monday and Tuesday. At the European headquarters of the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Office is hosting debates regarding the lasting significance of the document. The declaration came regarding following the devastating crimes committed by the Nazi regime during World War II. It should prevent something like this from ever happening once more.

The declaration states, among other things, that every person has the right to life, liberty, security, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. The program in Geneva includes debates on the subject of human rights. Among others, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen is taking part. At the invitation of the Human Rights Commissioner, Volker Türk, the Federal President will give a keynote speech on Tuesday on the topic “The future of human rights, climate and the environment”. A one-on-one meeting with Türk and a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, are also on the agenda. Further contributions from heads of state and government as well as ministers, some via video, are expected.
