Yesterday we learned the terrible news: Lou Deprijck, the somewhat whimsical Belgian singer to whom we owe the famous song “That Plane For Me” died at the age of 77. He was suffering from health problems and had recently been staying in a Brussels hospital.
His partner, Vanessa Vanderkimpen reacted on her Facebook account a few hours following the death of Lou Deprijck was made official. It was with these poignant words that she paid tribute to him: “My Lou, my friend, my love, the man of my life… I need to tell our story, tell how lucky we were. We met at Enzo’s in January 2021, during a trophy presentation. I saw you out of the corner of my eye, but I preferred to concentrate on my performance, and I must admit that you impressed me a lot. Once my appearance was over, I went to my dressing room, and behind me, I heard a voice saying “bravo Leonor”, it was you. Before meeting you, I had discovered your songs by chance on YouTube. They reminded me of Latin songs, and they warmed my heart . You see, we didn’t know each other yet, but you were already a ray of sunshine for my heart. We ended up getting to know each other and we spent a lovely evening together. We were starting to have a great bond. In February, we we’re back for the showcase at Enzo’s.”

Then she continues: “I remember that you voted for me, and that made me smile. Our relationship became special, endearing, tender. We got to know each other, yet had the strange feeling of already knowing each other, as if it were obvious. (…) You always knew how to captivate me, make everything more beautiful. You warned me that you were going to Thailand, and I had the idea of inviting you to a Colombian restaurant to honor my origins, it was for my birthday in March . It was an unforgettable moment. You were there, like a wonderful gift of life. That day, as a shy proof of my budding feelings, I gave you my Colombian necklace. You knew what he meant something to me, and you were very touched by it. I admit, when I came home, I thought of you, of your sparkling look, of your smile, of your laughter, and of your good humor.”
The striking statement continues: “You managed to make me laugh for nothing, and I felt good, thanks to you. On my birthday, I received a call, it was you. (…) Does love at first sight exist- it still? The answer is YES. Yes, it still exists, and our history is the proof. (…) One weekend, during a concert together, you approached me, and you proved your love in the most natural way possible, with a tender kiss full of promises. The more the days passed, the more time passed, the happier we became, madly in love with each other. Love “was priceless. Being in your arms had become essential.”
“You made me a happy woman, you changed my life, you changed my vision of things, you taught me so many things, you introduced me to beautiful countries, and we still wanted to discover so many more . We were really like children discovering their first love. You helped me with many things, you gave me back the taste for living, the taste for smiling.”
We send him our condolences, as well as to the rest of the family of the artist from Lessines, in Hainaut.
