Celebrating the Darkness: A Kaleidoscopic Dive into Kafka’s Mind

On the occasion of the 2024 anniversary year for Franz Kafka, the Goethe-Zentrum Patras and MOSAIC//Culture & Creativity present the poster exhibition KOMPLETT KAFKA in collaboration with the artist Nicolas Mahler and Literaturhaus Stuttgart.

The KOMPLETT KAFKA exhibition which opened its doors at the MOSAIC Hub (Ermou 112, Markato) on Friday 27 September 2024, will last until Friday 25 October 2024. Opening hours: Monday – Friday: 10.00 – 18.00. The exhibition is bilingual, in Greek and German, and admission is free.

Franz Kafka was not only a writer, he also had a great passion for drawing: “I, my girl, have been a great talent for drawing,” he wrote partly ironically but also with secret pride in 1913 to his eternal fiancée, Felice Bauer for the his artistic aspirations.

The drawings he drew once gave him “greater satisfaction than anything else,” he says somewhere. What more fitting, then, than to commemorate his anniversary with a comic book biography, drawn by Nicolas Mahler, whose sketches have an equally minimalist style?

Mahler highlights Kafka’s life and work in an incomparably witty and scathing way, while not shying away from touching on some big questions: Why did Kafka’s plan to compile a series of cheap travel guides fail? Who wrote the sequel to one of his most important books entitled “The Re-Transformation of Gregor Samsa”? And what is behind the “white slave” story? You will find answers to the above and many more in the book KAFKA EVERYTHING. (Source: Suhrkamp Publications)

Nicolas Mahler was born in 1969 in Vienna, where he lives and works as a comic book designer and illustrator. His comics and cartoons are published in newspapers and magazines such as Die Zeit, NZZ am Sonntag, the Sunday Frankfurter Allgemeine and the satirical magazine Titanic. For his wide-ranging work, he has received many awards, including the Max und Moritz Award as “Best German-Speaking Comic Artist” in 2010, the Literaturhäuser Award in 2015, and the Sondermann Award in 2019. Mahler is artistic director of the School for Poetry in Vienna.
