Celebrating the centenary of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of UNAM

The Faculty of Philosophy and Letters was founded in 1924. First located in the University District of the Historic Center, it moved to the Mascarones Building around 1938, and finally established itself within the first circuit of Ciudad Universitaria in 1954, where it occupies the space we inhabit today.

Our Faculty is an important reference for the world in which we move today, which is made up of a society of complex coexistence with multifactorial and multidimensional risks, with aspects ranging from the physical, through the environmental and technological to the social. The humanistic disciplines that meet and dialogue here have provided cultural and social foundations for our country, from the first map of the Mexican Republic that gave identity to the territory, to the history that accounts for the events that have built today’s society.

The humanities are thus emerging as the space that allows us to give a well-founded response to the challenges we face in this 21st century, from its 16 disciplines, ranging from Philosophy, History and Geography, through Classical, Hispanic and Modern Literature, where they coexist with Theater, Latin American Studies, Intercultural Management, Pedagogy, Library Science and Archival Science. Likewise, research institutes have been formed that emanated from its disciplines, and today the Faculty is an entity participating in 15 UNAM postgraduate programs. All of this gives our community an extraordinary wealth and the possibility of dialoguing from the knowledge and feelings of the humanities.
