MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— In the framework of the commemorative event for the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Mexico-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena said that “it is cutting-edge” and stands out for its clarity, breadth and institutionality, especially in the resolution mechanisms.
During a working tour of Santiago de Chile, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) welcomed the progress of trade exchange with the Treaty and the resolution of disputes between the two countries.
“Mexico is ready for Mexican markets to serve Chile, and for Chile to also make its own markets available to us,” he said.
He also highlighted the modernization of the agreement with chapters such as the inclusion of women in foreign trade and the collaboration between micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the tools to “build a sovereign future.”
He called for “thinking about how we can unite more in terms of investments” towards deeper integration with North America.
“The relationship between Mexico and Chile is going through one of its brightest periods,” he said, highlighting the “deep affinities” between the governments of Presidents López Obrador and Gabriel Boric.
Alicia Bárcena stressed that both countries have shown unwavering solidarity in emergency situations such as the fires in Chile and Hurricane Otis in Acapulco: “They are always looking out for each other, which means that we not only relate through diplomacy, but also as brothers.”
Raquel Buenrostro, Secretary of Economy, attended the event virtually.
