Leading the charge is the Los Angeles County department of Parks and Recreation, offering over 60 free events throughout the month in its parks. From tantalizing food tastings and engaging art workshops to captivating documentary screenings, there’s something to captivate every member of the community. Venues like Del Aire Park in Hawthorne, El Cariso Park in Sylmar, and Rimgrove Park in La Puente will be transformed into bustling hubs of cultural celebration.

“Black History Month is a time to honor the triumphs, contributions, and resilience of African Americans throughout U.S. history,” shares Norma E. García-González, Director of Los Angeles County Parks. “Too ofen, this history is minimized, marginalized, or erased.That’s why these LA County celebrations of Black history are also a crucial chance to uplift and highlight the Black community in LA County.”

García-González emphasizes the importance of making black history accessible to all. “Our park celebrations will feature family-friendly activities that honor Black history. These joyful and informative events help underscore that Black history is American history,” she states.

Beyond the County’s initiatives, other cultural institutions are joining the commemoration. The California African American Museum (CAAM) is hosting a Black History Month zine workshop on February 8th and “A Tribute to Black legacy in Opera” on February 27th. Their annual King Day commemoration, originally scheduled for January, has been moved to February 17th.

Also rescheduled from its original Martin Luther King Jr. Day date, the Kingdom Day Parade will take place on February 17th, starting at Western Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevard.

Art enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the pan African Film and Arts Festival, celebrating its 33rd year with a diverse program of films from around the world. this acclaimed festival runs from February 4th to 23rd at locations including The Culver Theater, Cinemark Baldwin Hills crenshaw Plaza 15 and XD, and the Westfield culver shopping Center.

Those looking for a touch of magic are in for a treat! Hollywood’s iconic magic Castle will be hosting a unique tribute to Black magicians from February 3rd to 9th. The Los Angeles County Library is also hosting an array of captivating Black History Month programs throughout February. “Absolutely! On February 19th,we’re hosting a celebration atKenneth Hahn State Recreation Area,” Brown said excitedly. “There will be live jazz, a flavorful soul food feast, and a special tribute to local Black community leaders. It promises to be a joyful and moving event.”
