Ceballos opens campaign aboard a tractor on Caracas highway

Caracas, Jul 4 (EFE).- Presidential candidate Daniel Ceballos launched his campaign in Venezuela for the July 28 elections on Thursday aboard a tractor, in which he traveled several kilometers along Caracas’ main highway, escorted by a hundred motorcyclists honking their horns.

“We are here with our tractor, which represents strength, production, reconstruction. We hope that all the candidates today begin a high-quality campaign, so that the people win.”the former mayor of San Cristóbal, a city located 800 kilometers from Caracas, told EFE.

The candidate, who was imprisoned for four and a half years for “allowing” anti-government protests in 2014, said he represents decentralization and those who want Venezuela, governed by Chavez since 1999, to change.

“We represent (…) those who want to turn this election into a victory for all Venezuelans. It doesn’t matter who wins, (but) that the Venezuelan does not lose, that is the objective of this campaign, that democracy wins, that Venezuela wins,” he said.

The former mayor reiterated that President Nicolás Maduro – in power since 2013 and who will seek a third term in these elections – represents “hunger” and is the main culprit of the crisis of basic services that the country is experiencing.

During his tour, Ceballos – who proposes a digital government and the state use of cryptocurrencies – showed a poster offering free Wi-Fi, a service he called ‘Maduro is hunger’ and which might be accessed by anyone with a smart device.

“We are going to take the proposal for change, technology, and honesty to Miraflores (the presidential palace),” added the opposition leader, a critic of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), which sees him as a collaborator of the government.

The political campaign has formally begun this Thursday and will continue until the 25th, during which time the 10 candidates – among them Edmundo González Urrutia, standard-bearer of the PUD – will carry out activities in almost all regions of the country in search of support.
