THE voices of the world’s countries, including Indonesia, need to continue to be consistent and louder in calling for peace and independence for the Palestinian people. A ceasefire for the current war needs to be realized immediately in order to stop the suffering of the Palestinian people.

This emerged in a symposium titled All Eyes on Palestine held by the NasDem Party in Jakarta, Saturday (24/8). The symposium was held as part of a series to welcome the 3rd Congress of the NasDem Party which will take place on 25-27 August 2024.

The Head of the NasDem DPP for International Relations, Martin Manurung, invited all parties to unite to consistently show solidarity with Palestine so that it can be independent.

According to him, all elements need to unite to voice peace and Palestinian independence because the struggle is not due to a particular identity but rather a humanitarian issue.

“The NasDem Party as a national party stands in solidarity with the Palestinian nation and especially with the current conflict between Palestine and Israel, we do not condone acts of violence, let alone war, from any party,” said Martin.

“We have emphasized our position that a ceasefire should be implemented immediately in Palestine,” he added.

News related to the conditions in Palestine, Martin said, is getting more heartbreaking every day because tens of thousands of people have become victims. The NasDem Party, he added, has also asked the Indonesian government to take strategic steps to encourage a quick ceasefire to be realized.

Meanwhile, Member of Commission I of the House of Representatives Muhammad Farhan emphasized that Indonesia’s official and formal stance is that it will never establish official diplomatic and trade relations with Israel as long as Palestine is not yet independent and has not been 100% recognized as a full member of the UN.

“That is why from a diplomatic perspective we are committed to maintaining the narrative of Palestinian independence as a narrative that always resonates in all bilateral and multilateral international events,” he said.

The symposium also featured former Palestinian National Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh. He is also scheduled to meet President Joko Widodo at the NasDem Congress.

Mohammad Shtayyeh appreciated the continued support from Indonesia for Palestine. Shtayyeh reminded that the current situation in Palestine is getting worse due to the Israeli attacks that have occurred for the past 10 months.

“I came to Indonesia when Palestine was bleeding. Israel was committing genocide against our people in Gaza, Jerusalem, and other Palestinian territories,” he said.

“Forty thousand Palestinians were killed, fifty thousand others died from lack of medicine, hunger, lack of water, viruses, diseases, and so on,” Shtayyeh said. (Z-6)
