On Thursday, July 11, the Constitutional Court (CC) decided to grant the provisional protection requested by Jorge Adolfo Mondal Chew, which keeps him as president of the board of directors of the Workers’ Bank.

President Bernardo Arévalo had removed Mondal Chew from office on May 22, through an agreement issued by the General Secretariat of the Presidency.

Yesterday, the president of the CC, Nester Vásquez Pimentel, as well as the incumbents Roberto Molina Barreto and Dina Ochoa, excused themselves from the plenary session to hear the amparo action. Their places were taken by the substitute magistrates Claudia Paniagua, Walter Jiménez Texaj and Luis Alfonso Rosales. The incumbent Leyla Lemus presided over the session.

Arévalo had appointed Walter Arturo Armendariz Díaz to the post on February 8, and it was then that Mondal Chew sought constitutional protection, which he won 18 days later. The Presidency of the Republic, in a second attempt, had ordered his dismissal in May and yesterday failed once more in its attempt.

Mondal Chew was appointed during the government of Alejandro Giammattei Falla to cover a four-year term, which ends on July 31, 2026.

In May, when the President ordered the dismissal, he justified the decision in a message on social media X because Mondal Chew had been accused of ideological falsehood and perjury.
