Now let’s take a moment to pay homage to the real heroes of this tale: the canine agents of the Border Patrol, or as I like to call them, “The K-9 Dream Team.” These furry detectives have a nose for trouble and a talent for finding things that are downright *ruff*. In this particular escapade, a trained pooch helped to unearth a stash cleverly concealed in the battery compartment of a suspicious van. Now, that’s a shocker! I thought the only things found in batteries were, you know, *batteries*! Turns out, this particular battery was packed with enough fentanyl to warrant a serious conversation about dos and don’ts while driving.
Operation Apollo: The Drug Traffickers’ Kryptonite
What do we have next? A nod to Operation Apollo, the United States’ latest crusade against the rising tide of fentanyl trafficking. This isn’t just your standard operation; it’s like the Avengers of the drug enforcement world—except instead of Thor, you have agents with the responsibility of stopping something as potent and pernicious as fentanyl from reaching the streets. They’re not messing about, either. Since its launch in October 2023, Operation Apollo has had one goal: obliterate those criminal networks trying to sneak their goods across the border, one plastic-wrapped package at a time. In fact, nearly half of the 1,270 kilos of fentanyl seized in fiscal year 2023 came from the San Diego sector. That’s quite a score—no prize money needed!

Despite their best efforts to conceal illegal cargo, individuals trafficking drugs into the United States employ various tactics to execute their plans. However, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers are equipped with a comprehensive array of protocols and strategies designed to detect contraband, as evidenced by recent events at a San Diego port of entry.
Border Patrol authorities announced that they made two important drug seizures along Interstate 5, showcasing the ongoing battle against drug smuggling in the region.
On Wednesday, October 9, around 3:30 PM local time, authorities at the San Clemente station stopped a car on the road for a standard inspection process aimed at identifying suspicious activity.
Despite the smugglers’ attempts to disguise their illegal cargo with garbage bags, vigilant agents uncovered packages wrapped in plastic concealed within the green bags during their thorough examination.
After conducting the necessary drug tests, the load tested positive for narcotics, compelling authorities to take both the vehicle and the driver into custody for a more in-depth investigation at a nearby Border Patrol facility.
Less than 12 hours later, around 3:15 AM on Thursday, officers from the same station halted a van displaying suspicious behavior. In this incident, the use of a trained K-9 dog proved critical in uncovering the illegal cargo.
The canine unit promptly alerted agents to an object cleverly hidden in the vehicle’s battery compartment, prompting further investigation.
Upon thorough inspection, authorities confirmed that inside were packages wrapped in plastic that, after testing, were determined to contain fentanyl. Consequently, the driver was apprehended, and both the narcotics and the vehicle were confiscated.
In light of these significant drug-related arrests, San Diego Sector Chief Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel stated: “Transnational criminal organizations continue to use Interstate 5 as a key corridor for smuggling drugs from the border into the interior of the United States. We remain committed to working to protect our communities and dismantle these criminal networks.”
The previous seizures are part of Operation Apollo, an initiative that launched in October 2023, primarily focused on combating fentanyl trafficking.
Originally implemented in Southern California, Operation Apollo has since expanded into Arizona, enhancing its resources and partnerships in the fight against drug trafficking.
Of the over 1,270 kilos of fentanyl seized by the Border Patrol during the 2023 fiscal year, nearly half of these illicit drugs were intercepted within the San Diego sector.
