Peripheral neuropathy can have many causes. Among them, traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic, neurotoxic, genetic problems, and often, poorly regulated diabetes. The variety of causes and symptoms sometimes leads to a delay in diagnosis and therefore in effective management of the pathology.

In the nervous system, we distinguish the central nervous system from the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system encompasses the spinal cord and the brain, while the peripheral nervous system concerns the nerves located outside the spinal cord and the brain. Simply put, the peripheral nervous system involves both cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and the billions of nerve cells found in the body. We call neuropathy peripheral the injury or dysfunction of one or more peripheral nerves. When only one nerve is affected, it is called mononeuritis. When several nerves are affected, we evoke polyneuropathy or polyneuritis. The causes are very varied, as are the symptoms, which sometimes makes the diagnosis difficult. However, this pathology is far from rare. According to the magazine Painin his article entitled “Neuropathy pain in the general population: A systematic review of epidemiological studies”, neuropathy affects 7 to 10% of the population.
