Asthenia refers to a state of intense and abnormal fatigue which tends to persist despite rest. And its causes are very varied. Here are the diseases that can cause such general weakness.

A viral or bacterial infection

Viral infectious diseases, such as influenza, infectious mononucleosis, Covid-19, or even hepatitis C, as well as diseases caused by bacteria – angina, otitis, pneumonia, pyelonephritis, tuberculosis, Lyme disease – can cause asthenia.

A psychological disorder

This symptom can be associated with a psychological disorder such as depression, generalized anxiety and bipolar disorder. Typically, patients with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa (ACE) also experience constant fatigue.

A sleep disorder

Sleep apnea causes severe fatigue and excessive sleepiness during the day. Other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome (RLS), which affects 8.5% of French people, as well as insomnia are likely to lead to asthenia.

An autoimmune condition

People with an autoimmune disease, which results from a dysregulation of the immune system, often complain of fatigue. We can cite lupus, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or even rheumatoid arthritis, a pathology which affects the joints.

A neurological disease

Certain neurological diseases cause profound fatigue, such as Parkinson’s disease, the second cause of motor disability in adults following stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease, which destroys brain cells and mainly affects memory.

An endocrine disease

An endocrine disease, hypothyroidism tends to cause severe fatigue because the low quantity of thyroid hormones will cause a slowdown in metabolism. The same goes for type 1 and type 2 diabetics. The latter often feel exhausted.

Anemia

Iron deficiency anemia is characterized by a decrease in the number of red blood cells in the blood. Quickly, the person will feel unusual fatigue and an almost permanent need for sleep.
