With loss of vision in adulthood, a person can rapidly develop dementia, since it will be difficult for him to compensate for the receipt of information by other senses. This was stated in an interview with URA.RU by neurologist Pavel Khoroshev.

“A person develops macular atrophy, that is, the visual canal fails for 2-5 years, and he goes blind. This has a terrible effect on a person. In this case, dementia develops rapidly. Intelligence, especially if he sits at home alone and there is no normal nurse, decreases very quickly. A person is not accustomed to this since childhood, like many blind people. He cannot compensate for receiving information through other channels, and dementia can develop at an alarming rate,” said Pavel Khoroshev.

At the same time, dementia can develop even following injury, the neurologist noted. “There can be many causes of dementia. It might be Alzheimer’s. Also trauma, for example, concussion. Chemical poisoning. It might be a vascular lesion, ”the specialist clarified.

As Khoroshev noted, anyone can notice that his relative or friend is developing dementia. But few people know what to do with it. “You need to actively communicate with a person, you need to involve him in social life. He needs to read, play on the computer. If there is no other entertainment, then at least I watched some things on the Internet, read, watched TV. We need an influx of the maximum amount of information into the brain, ”concluded the interlocutor of the agency.

Earlier, the culturologist of the center Victoria Mikhailova said that in the Moscow boarding house for the elderly “Opeka” – “Krasnogorsky” guests are being treated for dementia with the help of music. Neurologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences Rustem Gayfutdinov told URA.RU that risk of dementia depends on genetic predisposition, age, lifestyle, bad habits and level of education.
