Pediatrician Kristina Mulyukova from the medical company SberZdorovye spoke about the causes of meningitis and its symptoms.

She pointed out that bacteria, viruses and fungi are the main cause of this disease. The doctor also noted that although meningitis can develop against the background of other infections, it is most often caused by bacteria such as meningococcus and pneumococcus.
Mulyukova warned that meningitis can affect a person’s ability to walk, talk, think, hear and see.
She also reported that the initial symptoms of meningitis may be similar to those of otitis media or acute respiratory viral infections, which complicates diagnosis. However, high fever, nausea and vomiting, severe headache, photophobia, confusion and inability to bend the neck are common signs of meningitis.
The doctor noted that symptoms may manifest differently in children, but in any case they experience loss of activity, irritability, refusal to eat, convulsions and swelling of the large fontanel.
Mulyukova emphasized that vaccinations are the best way to prevent the development of meningitis. There are vaccines against the most common bacteria that cause this disease, such as meningococcus, pneumococcus and Haemophilus influenzae.
It is also important to get vaccinated against measles, flu, rubella, chickenpox and other infections that can trigger the development of meningitis, RT reports.
