There is no clear cause for caudal retraction syndrome, but there is a common belief among researchers that blocking the flow of oxygenated blood to the caudal region of the fetus may be due to the following risk factors:

Gestational diabetes: 16% of children with caudal retraction syndrome had it in their mothers.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

Exposure to retinoic acid.

Amino acid imbalance during pregnancy.
