At Solar & Storage Live (SSL) 2024, CATL unveiled the TENER Flex Rack energy storage system, expanding its TENER range with a breakthrough solution that combines flexibility, safety and performance, driving the global transition to green energy with innovative solutions that meet market needs.

In June this year, CATL launched its first TENER product, TENER Base, an energy storage system in TEU containers, in Munich. With its advanced safety features in various areas, zero degradation in the first 5 years of use and an energy yield of over 6 MWh, TENER Base has quickly gained popularity and recognition in the industry. It is part of CATL’s commitment to meet the evolving needs of its customers.

Recognising the geographical challenges of commercial battery storage in the UK and Europe, CATL has developed TENER Flex, a compact solution that reduces product size whilst delivering the high safety, long life and exceptional energy density that characterise the TENER brand. ‘Flex’, short for flexibility, represents the ground-breaking improvements in the usability of this product. TENER Flex features the zero degradation characteristic of the TENER brand and is designed for a wide range of applications, adapting to different topographical features, climate conditions and different energy storage scenarios.

Flexible scalability and application possibilities

TENER Flex features an optimized design that can be mounted on skids in a space-saving back-to-back configuration to maximize the benefits for storage stations through flexibility. As energy supply systems deteriorate, the need for additional energy increases, often at high cost. TENER Flex offers a solution with the option of a string voltage converter system (string PCS) that allows AC-side addition and simplifies installation. Compatibility with existing infrastructure and reduced labor, time and operating costs make it ideal for large-scale projects requiring high end-of-life storage capacity.

Flexible power distribution

TENER Flex provides flexible power distribution to meet the diverse needs of large industrial and residential applications. It supports both string PCS and centralized PCS and integrates with voltage converter systems from 600V to 1500V for seamless operation. Each rack functions independently, ensuring system continuity even if one rack fails, increasing reliability and reducing downtime. With a scalable design that fits all centralized PCS on the market, TENER Flex minimizes maintenance costs and capital expenditure while adapting to the growing energy needs of projects of any size.

Flexible operating environments

TENER Flex can withstand temperatures from -40°C to 60°C, can operate at altitudes of up to 4,000 meters, and is IP56 rated for protection against heavy rain and 0-100% humidity. It ensures reliable performance in any environment, from urban areas to extreme conditions such as deserts and snow-capped mountains.

Flexible transport

Until now, the transportation of energy storage systems has been a major obstacle to flexible deployment. TENER Flex has overcome this challenge through its compatibility with a wide range of vehicles and meets the transportation requirements in different regions of the world.

Reliable noise and safety management

TENER Flex combines energy efficiency with strict noise and safety management. Its improved design achieves a noise level of 65 decibels, significantly reducing noise in environments such as hospitals, schools and markets.

Commitment to safety remains at the heart of TENER Flex. It uses a validation platform to simulate grid-level security threats under different power grid scenarios and reinforces standards to meet all requirements. Each cell is monitored throughout its lifecycle, enabling timely maintenance, optimized performance and extended lifetime. With an industry-leading PPB-level failure rate for individual battery cells, TENER Flex reduces operating costs and improves lifecycle internal rate of return (IRR).

CATL has built a strong presence in the UK market, completing more than 40 projects with a total capacity of around 3 GWh, with no accidents. In 2021, CATL participated in Europe’s largest grid-side battery energy storage project, the Minety Battery Energy Storage System. In 2022, CATL signed a long-term contract with Gresham House to supply battery storage systems with a capacity of up to 10 GWh. In 2024, CATL collaborated with Rolls-Royce to integrate TENER products into the mtu EnergyPack QG solution.

With a robust worldwide network of after-sales service branches, CATL is committed to supporting its customers anywhere in the world with professional, efficient and reliable services. To date, CATL operates 770 after-sales service centers worldwide, supported by more than 200 supervisors, more than 70 technical specialists and more than 60 spare parts warehouses, ensuring maintenance within three days and a response time of 24 hours. The CATL Global Training Center has been established to provide comprehensive multilingual support, with over 20 training courses planned worldwide.
