CATL, a global leader in new energy technologies, today called for more open innovation between companies and countries to solve the challenge of climate change. In his speech at the One Earth Summit in Hong Kong, Dr. CATL Chairman and CEO Robin Zeng said CATL is ready to make its technology and zero-carbon practices available to anyone committed to a faster transition to green energy, electric transportation and a circular economy – including competitors .
“Now more than ever, we need to work together if we are to solve humanity’s biggest problems, such as climate change,” said Dr. Zeng.
Constant technological progress is the key to sustainability, says Dr. Zeng. He highlighted the investments CATL has made in research and development to maintain its position as a global leader in battery technology. The company now employs more than 20,000 people worldwide in research and development and spent $2.59 billion on research and development in 2023. The nearly 30,000 granted and pending patents worldwide cover a wealth of breakthrough technologies, including the world’s first 4C super-fast charging LFP battery, which can achieve a range of 400 km on just a 10-minute charge, and the Qilin battery, which enables a range of 1,000 km on a single charge.
Dr. Zeng explained the significant steps CATL has taken to reduce its carbon emissions. Its four factories are already carbon-free, and all three World Economic Forum-recognized facilities in the battery industry are CATL facilities. The company has also committed to being carbon neutral in its core business by 2025 and ensuring a carbon neutral supply chain by 2035.
The company has also made great progress in recycling. In 2023, over 100,000 tons of battery waste will be recycled. With a recovery efficiency of 90%, 13,000 tons of lithium carbonate were recovered, significantly reducing the amount of mining required and accelerating the contribution to the circular economy.

In his speech, Dr. Zeng three key advantages of open innovation:
1. Bridging the technology gap: CATL shares its battery technology through its LRS (Licensing, Royalty, Service) model and supports OEM partners in building and operating battery systems. This will help them accelerate their operations and accelerate the transition to green energy.
2. Enabling new, zero-carbon scenarios: CATL is developing new ways to use battery technology to promote sustainability. For example, the company is working with its partner network on electric, unmanned mines and the replacement of batteries for both cars and heavy commercial vehicles.
3. Creating sustainable ecosystems: In the near future, electric vehicles might become decentralized energy storage devices, helping to feed and regulate gigawatts of energy into the grid. EV owners might even benefit financially by selling electricity to the grid at peak times.
