This week I spoke to the religious YouTuber who is shaking the Church. Thomas Remy is a religion teacher. On his channel “Faith and reason”, he is anything but politically correct.

Of course, he must have given the Belgian bishops a few cold sweats. On his Youtube channel, Thomas Remy offers videos on theology. It’s sometimes difficult, often interesting, but what is most striking is its ability to flirt with the limits. I imagine the faces of the priests when they watch the video on “Violent God” or when they hear that no angel can take you on the back.

I have an appointment with Thomas in the church next to the St Paul home in Louvain-la-Neuve. It is 10:30 a.m., the theologian has just given a religious lesson to students from a school in Wavre. We take advantage of his hour of fork to chat.

In a recent interview, he described his life before in these words: “I thought that life was to enjoy or die”. So I ask him if his life before was made up of alcohol and women? “I told myself that if God didn’t exist, everything was absurd. If my life had no meaning, neither would that of the other”. Today, the demons seem behind him.

Under provocative and ultra-secular airs, the man is in fact passionate about theology. I like when he says to his spectators: “we can criticize the Church but then we have to work. We are not on Tiktok”. And wham !

Who pays it?

During the conversation I ask Thomas Rémy if he is paid by the Church to evangelize the country. No, he told me, it’s a personal process. I continue on his report to the students. Do you evangelize them in class? ” Not exactly. If someone tries to convert you, it shows very quickly. I like questioning. Sometimes they even wonder if I’m Catholic. It is on my chain that I push the cursor further.

Last detail. For the title? Am I writing religious youtuber or something else? I prefer “catholic youtubeur”.
