Audi Sport unveiled its first plug-in hybrid performance model, the 2026 RS5, today, marking a significant shift for the brand’s high-performance lineup. Available in both saloon and Avant (estate) body styles, the RS5 replaces the RS4 and boasts a combined output of 639 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, according to Audi officials.
The new RS5 pairs a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine – carried over from the previous RS4 Avant – with an electric motor. The V6 itself produces 510hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, a 60hp increase over its predecessor. The addition of the electric motor elevates the total system output to 639hp, positioning it near the power level of the Audi RS Q8 Performance SUV.
A substantial 25.9kWh battery pack enables an all-electric range exceeding 50 miles, according to Audi. This plug-in hybrid system represents Audi Sport’s response to tightening emissions regulations, particularly within the European Union, and a move towards electrification within the performance car segment.
Power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip center differential, distributing torque between the front and rear axles as needed. Audi Sport has incorporated a world-first electro-mechanical torque vectoring system on the rear axle, allowing for dynamic torque distribution regardless of throttle position. This system, combined with a rear-axle torque vectoring feature and an RS torque rear mode, is designed to enhance handling and provide a more engaging driving experience, though the latter is intended for use on non-public roads.
The new RS5 is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds. The vehicle’s increased weight, however, is a notable characteristic of the new model, with reports indicating a significant increase compared to the outgoing RS4. Audi Sport managing director Rolf Michl stated that the RS5 “marks the beginning of a new era for our RS models,” aiming to balance performance with improved everyday usability through electric driving and innovative technologies.
The introduction of the RS5 signifies Audi Sport’s entry into the plug-in hybrid performance market, joining competitors such as Mercedes-AMG and BMW M, who already offer electrified performance models. Audi has not yet announced pricing or a firm release date beyond 2026.
