President Donald Trump has given Iran a 10-day deadline to reach a deal regarding its nuclear program, or face potential military action, according to statements made Thursday at the inaugural meeting of his “Board of Peace.” The announcement comes as the U.S. Continues to build a substantial military presence in the Middle East, including the deployment of a second aircraft carrier strike group, the USS Gerald R. Ford.
Addressing members of the Board of Peace, a new peacekeeping body focused on rebuilding efforts in Gaza, Trump stated, “We may have to take it a step further, or we may not. Maybe we’re going to make a deal,” adding that a decision would be reached “over the next probably 10 days.” He indicated that the outcome would be determined by Iran’s willingness to negotiate, stating, “You’re going to be finding out… but this meeting today is proof with determined leadership, nothing is impossible.”
The potential for military conflict has escalated following the failure of indirect nuclear talks between the U.S. And Iran in Geneva earlier this week. Prior to those talks, Trump warned of “bad things” happening to Iran if it did not significantly scale back its nuclear ambitions. Sources speaking to Axios have suggested a military operation could last several weeks and have a significant regional impact, with one Trump advisor estimating a “90 percent chance we spot kinetic action in the next few weeks.”
The U.S. Military buildup includes two aircraft carriers, a dozen warships, hundreds of fighter jets, and multiple air defense systems. This deployment follows a previous U.S. And Israeli military action in June, which reportedly obliterated Iran’s nuclear facilities and significantly hampered its nuclear program, according to a White House fact sheet released February 6th.
The Trump administration is also implementing economic pressure on Iran and countries that continue to trade with the Iranian regime. An Executive Order signed by President Trump establishes a tariff system on imports from any nation that purchases goods or services from Iran, aiming to protect U.S. National security, foreign policy, and economic interests. The order allows for modifications based on changing circumstances, retaliation, or significant steps taken by Iran or affected countries to align with U.S. Objectives.
The escalating tensions follow a period of unrest within Iran, including a brutal crackdown on protesters in January, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of thousands of Iranians. The administration has accused Iran of pursuing nuclear capabilities, supporting terrorism, developing ballistic missiles, and destabilizing the region. According to the White House, Iran is the “world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism,” supporting proxy groups and militias responsible for attacks on American forces and allies.
When asked by ABC News what the goal of a potential military strike would be, President Trump declined to answer, stating only, “but we’re either going to obtain a deal or it’s going to be unfortunate for them.” The president indicated a 10- to 15-day timeframe for a decision, reiterating the deadline given to the Board of Peace.
