Category 5 Hurricane Beryl will pass along Colombian coasts without touching land

Hurricane Beryl, which has been strengthened to Category 5, continues its movement through the Caribbean and on Tuesday will pass along the Colombian coast, near the La Guajira peninsula, generating strong gusts of wind and increased rainfall, but without touching land.

The latest estimates from the National Risk Management Unit maintain the yellow category of “warning” for the Caribbean departments of Magdalena, Atlántico, Bolívar and for the islands of San Andrés, Providencia, Santa Catalina and the keys, due to “the probable alterations of ocean conditions and the rains that might occur.”

This hurricane is expected to bring maximum winds of 260 kilometers and move at 35 kilometers per hour, leaving waves of up to 3.4 meters.

“Currently in the Caribbean Sea, a significant wave height of 1.5 to 3.4 meters (Sea 4-5) is observed, with winds from the east-northeast direction with speeds of 17 to 25 knots (Force 4-6),” noted the UNGRD in its latest bulletin.

Influence

The hurricane’s influence will be felt especially in the morning hours in the northern area of the Colombian Caribbean coast, where “a gradual increase in wave height and wind speed is expected” and “tropical storm conditions cannot be ruled out for the maritime and coastal area of La Guajira, which is why a warning alert is in effect for this sector.”

In response to this phenomenon, authorities have protocols in place and have recommended preparation actions on the coast, as well as staying alert to changes in wave height both on the Caribbean coast and in the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

At the moment, there are no air impacts due to the hurricane.

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season is set to be well above average, with up to 13 hurricanes possible, including up to seven major hurricanes, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
