catch your breath and dive into the water

In Scandinavia they are no different. Sweat, splash, sweat, splash and on once more. Not the large-scale sauna complexes where you sit shoulder to shoulder on a wooden bench, but the mini sauna is gaining ground: a small sauna near water where you can sweat (out) on your own or with an (un)known group of people.

In Norway, the floating sauna is popular, which you encounter in nature reserves and in the frayed edges of a city, such as the harbor area in Oslo. This phenomenon is also emerging in Amsterdam: at the moment you can book a mini sauna session in four different places.

1. Sweat & eat at De Ceuvel

As an American, Julie Capps was not familiar with the phenomenon of sauna culture. Until she moved to Copenhagen and experienced for herself how groups of friends not only meet each other in the pub, but also book a sauna session together. Preferably in a mini sauna, so you don’t have to share the space with strangers.

Once settled in Amsterdam, Capps found a place to start her own sauna: last year she opened Badhus at café De Ceuvel in Noord, a mini sauna that you can rent with a maximum of six people, all year round. “I find it’s especially popular in the spring,” says Capps. “Then people naturally want to go outside more.”

At Badhus you pay 100 euros for 90 minutes of private sweating with the six of you. Capps provides two plunge pools and a fireplace. Also nice: in collaboration with De Ceuvel, she regularly organizes dip & dine. For 60 euros per person you get a starter, main course and dessert at De Ceuvel, two drinks of your choice and you can enter the mini sauna for 90 minutes.

2. The Sauna Caravan in New West

The Sauna Caravan has been roaming through Amsterdam since 2012, but since May 2022 they have had a permanent location in the Gardens of West, where you can enjoy three different saunas: two normal and one silent sauna. To cool off you can use the plunge pool or a cold shower for the real Nordic sauna experience. In addition, there is a campfire, there is a band or singer-songwriter every Sunday and soup is served in the heated indoor area. Please note: tickets are only available online since April!

3. Sauna with a view

The Marineterrein is a popular place for swimming. For most people only in the summer, but there are brave Amsterdammers who go into the water all year round. To warm up, you can combine this with a sauna visit to Kuuma, with a view of the Scheepvaartmuseum.

Inspired by a sauna visit in the north of Norway, four friends brought this experience to the Netherlands. You can book a drop-in (for 1 or more people) or book the whole sauna with a group of friends. The sauna will be there until mid-May. Reservations can be made via Kuuma itself or via Classpass.

4. On the quay

Kuuma also has a pop-up sauna in Noord, in front of ’boutique cinema’ FC Hyena on the quay. From the sauna you have a beautiful view over the IJ. You alternate the sauna with a dip in the water or under one of the buckets that hang there. You have to operate this yourself by pulling the rope: so just keep going. This sauna will also be there until mid-May and you can book it via Kuuma itself or Classpass.
