Cat Slaughter Investigation: Security Guard Suspected – Pending Necropsy Results

CANOVANAS – The security guard, who was intervened last Friday as a suspect in the cruel slaughter of 35 cats that occurred last week in the stables of the Camarero Hippodrome, was released pending the results of the necropsy on one of the dead specimens.

If it is determined that the cat was poisoned, as suspected, the filing of serious charges once morest the 50-year-old security guard is anticipated, under the animal protection law.

The cats were found dead in and around the stables, and the investigation began on Monday of last week, with the collaboration of the racetrack administration. Most of the cats were buried for hygienic reasons and at least one of them was taken to a veterinarian in Caparra, to determine what caused their death.

In 2007 and 2014, the deaths of seven and three cats, respectively, had been recorded in Old San Juan.

Agent Carlos Coll, from the Animal Abuse Unit, is in charge of the investigation, which to date shows that the security guard might have been responsible. The man was arrested at regarding 6:00 p.m. on Friday and defended his right not to testify, on the advice of his lawyer.

In October 2007, a massacre of around 80 cats and dogs was reported, which were thrown from the Paso del Indio bridge, on the José de Diego Highway, in Vega Baja.
