Across model generations, the Toyota Corolla is considered the best-selling car in the world. After its market launch in the mid-1960s, the compact Japanese model also became a bestseller in Europe. In addition to the sales charts, the Toyota Corolla also shone in the breakdown statistics of motorists’ clubs as a prime example in the reliability category. After a visual makeover, the current vintage not only wants to be reliable, but also casual. Oh well.
Design: The new make-up suits the Japanese quite well, but the Corolla is still not a car that many people turn to. Especially not when it comes in the station wagon version like in the OÖN test. After all, the look has developed from “bland” to “well-behaved”. We take note of the fact that the Japanese gave this model the nickname “Touring Sports” as a nice attempt.
Inner space: What applies on the outside continues on the inside. The cockpit is well tidy, the focus is on practical utility, there is no need for show elements or design experiments. The multimedia system with the ten-inch screen appears very dominant and the fact that the radio volume knob has been rationalized away is annoying. The rearview mirror is very large – it is almost too conspicuous in the driver’s field of vision. The seating comfort is excellent, and this also applies to the passengers in the second row. Big hatch, a lot behind it: The trunk can hold up to 1305 liters (with the rear seat backs folded down), and the loading sill is pleasingly deep. The fact that you have to open and close the tailgate yourself is only negatively noticed by people who have been spoiled or spoiled by models with electric tailgates.
Landing gear: The nickname “Sports” is a bit of a misnomer, as the chassis is not designed to be particularly sporty. Which is not a mistake, because with a harder set-up the driving comfort is naturally compromised. The Corolla, on the other hand, is gentle and friendly to its passengers even on long journeys. The fact that it prefers to be a glider rather than a hustler is also due to its drive technology with the somewhat slow, continuously variable automatic transmission.
Motor: The small electric motor and the four-cylinder combustion engine form a good symbiosis, as long as you don’t break out the whip. The engine protests quite loudly once morest people who have lead in their accelerator foot. Thanks to electric support, the Corolla with its 140 hp system output is pleasantly dynamic when starting off, but this “hurrah-for-the-chamois” attitude is lost as the speed increases. The hybrid Corolla rewards relaxed minds with a high level of driving comfort and low fuel consumption. In the OÖN test this was 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
Conclusion: The Toyota Corolla in the station wagon version finds a satisfactory answer to almost every question that arises in everyday automotive life. What more do you want?
