Casino is experimenting with a pet store concept

The Casino supermarket chain has opened a brand new pet store concept in Paris with around 1,400 references.

More than 1,000 euros per year

With ‘Casino Pet Shop’, the retail group and its 11,500 stores (208,000 employees worldwide) – and its other brands Franprix and Monoprix – are ‘testing the waters’ of products for dogs and cats. Among the stores already well established, let us mention for example Maxi Zoo (the brand has seen its turnover increase by 25%, supported by the opening of 180 stores in the last 5 years and 45 new stores planned for 2022), Zoomalia,
Animals, Etc.

A growth market

The product market for pets has experienced strong growth over the past 10 years (+48%). It is now estimated at nearly 4.7 billion euros in France. The health crisis has benefited the market for animals of company. On average, the owners now spend more than 1,000 euros per year on them.

The animal population continues to grow

The first test store ‘Casino Animalerie’ opened in Paris in the 16th arrondissement at 16 Rue des Belles Feuilles. The store offers 1,400 references useful on a daily basis are sold there, specifies Olivier Dauvers, specialist in mass distribution. Hygiene products, feedaccessories are available.

Upscaling of the offer

The market is growing, particularly with the upscaling of the offer (organic food, ‘grain-free’, well-being products, connected objects, etc.). Note that pure players (e-commerce) specializing in the pet market are also booming.

Ban on selling dogs and cats

According to specialists in the sector, the pet market will remain dynamic in the coming years, as the animal population continues to grow. From January 1, 2024, pet stores will be prohibited from selling dogs and cats for ethical and health reasons.
