Cases of road crossing accidents are on the rise in Oman

Muscat: There are reports of increasing accidents while crossing the road in Oman. Compared to 2020, there has been an increase of 12.9 percent in the cases of vehicle collision last year. In 2020, 297 cases of vehicle collisions were reported in different parts of Oman. 93 lives were lost. 79 of them are male and 14 are female. Road accidents have also been reduced due to development works on roads.

Although there are many reasons for car accidents, it is often the driver’s negligence that leads to the tragedy. The Royal Oman Police asked citizens and residents to be cautious while crossing the road, including on major roads. Driving the vehicle carelessly or without caution is punishable by imprisonment up to one month and a fine not exceeding 300 riyals. If the injured person is forced to leave work for 30 days or otherwise, the driver will be imprisoned for up to three months and fined not more than 500 riyals. If the accident results in the death of a person, the driver will be punished with imprisonment not exceeding three months to one year and a fine of up to 2,000 Riyals.
