Cascading resignations: New York mayor’s right-hand man resigns

NEW YORK (EFE).— The vice mayor of New York, Sheena Wright, resigned from her position yesterday, thus becoming the eighth senior official to do so, although her case is more significant for being the “right hand” of Mayor Eric Adams, cornered by a series of federal investigations against himself and his collaborators for corruption cases.

Last month, federal investigators confiscated Sheena Wright’s phones and searched her home and those of other officials who have already resigned, the latest of which was her brother-in-law Philip Banks, deputy mayor for Public Safety, who resigned yesterday.

The list of those who resigned also includes the Commissioner of Education, David Bank, husband of Sheena Wright and brother of Philip, who is also under investigation and whose cell phones were also confiscated, as well as the chief of police, Edward Cabán, and Timothy Terence, one of the mayor’s closest collaborators.

Two other mayoral employees, Winne Greco and Mohammed Bahi, who worked as liaisons between the community and the administration, also resigned on Monday, according to ABC Channel 7.

It also indicates that Bahi was arrested yesterday for obstructing the investigation into the mayor and his campaign. He is accused of witness tampering and destruction of evidence.

While Rana Abbasova, who served as director of protocol at the office for international affairs, who was on leave, was fired.

According to what was revealed to the media, Rana Abbasova is linked to the investigation by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office of Adams for accepting donations from foreigners for his campaign or for enjoying free luxury trips. He has allegedly been cooperating with the Prosecutor’s Office.

Adams is also the subject of a federal investigation, accused of bribery, wire fraud and soliciting and receiving money from foreigners for his campaign in his relationship with the Turkish government.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office assured that it will file more charges against the mayor and that the investigation continues.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, with the power to fire Adams, has not yet taken that step and has limited herself to reminding that she is monitoring the municipal administration and that she expects more changes to be made.
